William Cuevas, a foreign pitcher for KT Wiz, warned pitchers about the pitch clock that will be introduced in the KBO next season. He pointed out that injuries can occur while trying to adjust to the pitch clock. This means they will have to adapt quickly.
Cuevas came to KT in June from Triple-A Los Angeles after being released from his contract last year due to an elbow injury, and he looked much better in Korea.굿모닝토토 도메인
In 18 appearances, he went 12-0 with a 2.60 ERA. He had 14 quality starts, allowed just 1.04 hits per nine innings, and had a 2.24 K/BB ratio. He finished with a 100 percent winning percentage and won the KBO’s first title in five years.
Despite his late arrival, Cuevas believes it was to his benefit. “I had a fresh start with the Dodgers and those two months helped me tremendously, so I was able to pitch well in Korea starting in June,” Cuevas said.
Cuevas also had to adjust to the new rules in the United States. Major League Baseball’s pitch clock requires pitchers to throw within 15 seconds with no runners on base and 20 seconds with runners in scoring position. If the pitcher doesn’t leave the mound within the time limit, a ball is called. The batter must also be ready to hit with 8 seconds remaining. Otherwise, a strike is automatically called. The pitch clock starts when the pitcher receives the ball from the catcher. You have to throw the ball faster than you think.
“I think it will be hard for Korean pitchers if the new rule is applied,” Cuevas said of the pitch clock. “Even in the United States, there were some injuries because of the new rule, and a lot of injured players said they were injured because of the pitch clock. I think it will be a tough time.”
Since the Major Leagues have seen a significant reduction in game time due to the pitch clock, the KBO has also decided to introduce a pitch clock next season. Korea also has a speed-up rule that requires pitchers to throw within 12 seconds when there are no runners on base, but there was no time limit when there were runners on base. This time, pitchers will have to throw within the time limit with runners on base. The KBO has yet to finalize a time limit for pitch clocks in the KBO League.
LG implemented a pitch clock in their secondary teams this year. Since it’s been implemented in the major leagues, they figured there was a good chance it would be adopted in Korea, so they started with the second team. We put a clock in the stadium at LG Champions Park in Icheon and turned it on for 12 seconds in the actual game so that the players could recognize it and throw, and in training, we had them throw at 15 and 20 seconds like in the major leagues.
Pitchers are very sensitive. If their routine is disrupted, it can throw them off balance. Pitchers with a slow pitching rhythm have to change their routine quickly to keep up with the pitch clock. This can lead to injuries, so it should be approached with caution. Teams are already preparing for the pitch clock by bringing out clocks in batting practice.
